Libby de Liberdade explores the lifeworld of centenarian freedom fighter, administrator, and advocate Libia “Libby” Lobo Sardesai. Born in 1924, Libby witnessed India’s freedom struggle against the British and the Second World War as a young person. Driven by a desire to see Goa free, Libby, along with Vaman Sardesai, ran the Voice of Freedom, a clandestine radio station, from the forests bordering Goa. This radio station broadcasted anti-colonial content every night for six years between November 1955 and December 1961 to resist the Portuguese colonial propaganda. Spanning two years from the run-up to Libby’s 100th birthday celebrations in May 2024, the film brings together her memories and present-day experiences to chronicle a Goa in transition.
